As a kid, Nick always felt different because he was able to notice things about other people, things no one else could see. But he made a huge effort to hide this ability, because above all he wanted to be loved and he was afraid the other kids would think he was âweirdâ. After his parents died, Nick was raised by his Aunt Marie. Nick loved his aunt, but he still longed for his mom and especially for his dad, and this feeling never really went away, as he always looked for a father figure, someone who would anchor and guide him. To complicate things, Nick and his aunt moved around quite a lot and, as a result, he grew up lacking a true sense of home. Since Aunt Marie tried very hard to hide his family heritage from him, they had no family traditions to speak of. His parentsâ absence and the constant moving during his childhood and teenage years left Nick with an acute sense of helplessness, a feeling that he had no control over his life. It was partly this sense of helplessness which led him to become a cop.
jujubiest and myself had this discussion a while back, and I think we came to the conclusion that the timelines just donât match up for Trubel to be Nickâs younger sister, and since there is at least ten years between them, they canât be twins.
However, we do love their brother/sister relationship, and look forward to it continuing!
Hey there! Admin Liz here, putting in her two cents.
I LOVE Trubel and her relationship with Nick – they definitely have a sibling/mentor thing going on and I feel like Trubel really needed someone she could rely on (even though Nick can be a bit… unpredictable?).
As far as them being actual siblings go, there are a lot of fan theories out there talking about Trubelâs background. Iâm assuming Nick is in his 30s and Trubel is in her 20s, so in all honesty while they could be siblings, I agree that itâs highly unlikely, though I donât think itâs completely farfetched that they are somehow related. Iâd assume that there is some sort of familial bloodline that runs through all Grimms, since the powers canât possibly be that random.
We have yet to learn exactly how Grimm powers work. Obviously they run in families, but both parents donât have to be Grimms to have a child with the powers (as demonstrated by Nickâs parents). Hopefully in the coming seasons theyâll explore this more. Personally, I was hoping they would go into this a bit when Nick lost his powers, but I think that is something we would have to learn about from someone who has been raised in a proper Grimm household, unlike Nick and Trubel who learned about their family legacy later in life, when there was no one there to really explain it. Iâd be interested to find out if itâs sort of like a Rowling Wizarding World thing where there are pure blood, half blood, and muggle born (for lack of a better term) Grimms.
With the show going into its fifth season, hopefully weâll start getting some more information on the actual mythology of the world theyâre building, as well as some further background information on our beloved Trubel!
Ah, Nick…your trademark sledgehammer subtlety rears its head.
