Why is Sean evil?? I’ve been in and out of Grimm since like season 4 and Sean was one of my faves what is happening??? (Also, do you think I should catch up or just follow the show via fandom I can’t decide..)

That is a long and complicated question…and I’m not sure I would call him evil, necessary. It’s just that his loyalties have changed drastically since season 4. Not always for the better, either.

And like a lot of fans, I’ve never been satisfied with the reasons for Sean’s seemingly sudden change in season 5. I can headcanon some stuff together for it, but IMO something as pivotal as a major character’s motivation behind a complete 180 on loyalties shouldn’t be left up to headcanon, or at least not entirely so.

My best guess is that when Diana was taken by the royals and that helicopter went down, Sean honestly didn’t know at first whether she’d even survived…and then he didn’t know where she was for several months. I think that affected him far more than we initially realized as an audience, because when I look back it was right after that when Sean started withdrawing from the team quite a bit.

Enter Black Claw, promising power and influence and protection…and then giving him his daughter back, alive and well. It was only after they gave Diana to him that Sean really got on board with their plans and seemed to drink the Kool-Aid.

So I think it was a combination of things that made Sean go bad, not least of which was a lot of unspoken resentment, fatherly grief, and Team Grimm’s tendency to do whatever they think will solve the problem of the moment without always considering the long-term consequences or collateral damage.

That being said, I do think you should catch up as long as long as you’re not triggered or deeply squicked out by Nadalind (there is a lot of it in seasons 5-6). Their scenes are more numerous than I would like, but they are mostly brief. And the show improved drastically in season 5 and has been as good as ever thus far in season 6.

I’m pretty sure Sean will die. He has been my favorite character for so long and his actions lately have hurt me because, well, I trusted him???? But also I’m so afraid (and sure) that he’ll die.

Sean’s at the top of my list of characters who will probably die, too. After “Blind Love” it seems like they’re definitely not planning to redeem his character at all, which leaves death as the only other narratively satisfying option.

Not that I’m happy about this. I trusted Sean, too, and I’m really mad/sad about the direction they took his character last season and the fact that they seem intent on leaving him a bad guy.

is there maybe a gifset or something with the times sean woges? Cause if not i might actually try making something (partly to see if the other anon is right, partly beause i love his woge /very/ much)

I don’t have one. I’m sure the gifs are out there, but I don’t think I’ve ever seen one that compiled all his woges. Would be interesting to see how much they differ side-by-side like that, though!

If you decide to make one, Nonny, please tag us! We’d love to see/ooh-ahh over/reblog it!

How did Renard go from ‘I must protect the Grimm, I must help the Grimm, I must be on the Grimm’s side, the Grimm’s friends are my friends, keep Team Grimm safe,” to ‘Hey tiny daughter if Nick happens to step out of line you should kill him.’ Like how???

This is basically what I’ve been screaming most of last season and all of this one. I will never be fully satisfied with the way that arc was written and how far they took his foray into villainy. He was such a great, ambiguous character, someone you wanted to trust and were never quite sure you could. Well, now the mystery is dead because we know for sure we can’t, and it’s just damn unsatisfying. Aside from one other plot development which shall go unnamed, it’s probably my least favorite thing the show has done, and the most nonsensical.

It also doesn’t make sense for his character now. Assuming I buy that Renard never had any loyalty to anyone but himself, and was just that ruthlessly pragmatic and ready to jump ship at the first sign that he might get a little more power elsewhere, his actions in that scene make zero sense still.

We know Renard doesn’t give a shit about Adalind, aside from maybe being put out that she doesn’t want him anymore, so it certainly wasn’t for her benefit that he said that to Diana.

And he knows Nick very well, so there’s no way he was actually worried about Nick being abusive toward Adalind in any way.

And it’s been made very clear to him that if anything untoward happens to Nick, he will pay for it. Sure, he has a superpowered daughter, but she’s gotta sleep sometime, and Hank and Wu are patient.

Apparently, too, he’s not at all worried about what kind of toll it might take on his child to be responsible for multiple murders once she’s old enough to fully understand the ramifications of her actions…but then again he doesn’t seem to have much of a conscience unless someone is literally making him have one via haunting him (thanks Meisner), so maybe he doesn’t even understand how it might bother her someday.

Sorry, Nonny, you didn’t ask for this rant. It’s just that this question inadvertently opened a wound and, since I’m literally made of the stuff when it comes to this topic, salt went pouring into it.

*Crash in your askbox from the ceiling* SPEAKING OF WOGE Did you notice how inconsistent Renard woge is across all different seasons it’s driving me up the waaaall 8| CGI dudes y u do dis to us

Honestly…I’ve never noticed it. Like I’ve seen it mentioned a few times by different people and my reaction is always just that: “huh. I never noticed.”

It might have something to do with the woge itself, tbh. I can look at images of Rosalee all day and pick out all the tiny things I’ve always found so pretty about her woge. But Sean’s? I’ve honestly tried not to look too closely at it, because:

Yikes.

even if meisner is only a hallucination i’m just happy that his death is having such a huge impact on sean, i mean the guy is seeing his friend everywhere and its killing him. meisner’s death is killing him

One can only hope.

I’m sorry, that was mean. But I am very frustrated with Sean right now. I am glad to see that he has at least the capacity for remorse still, but I wanted to hit something when he tried to justify Meisner’s murder with “I was putting you out of your misery.” Like what the fuck, Sean?!
