Real Life Wesen 02: Wulver

In this new series, we’re gonna be looking at some of the folklore and history behind some of the Wesen, gangs and other monsters of Grimm.

This week, we’re gonna look at the Wulver, a friendly werewolf type creature who must have inspired Monroe’s character.

The Wulver, said to have never been a man and instead is an immortal spirit, is said to be non-aggressive, provided you leave it alone.

It comes from Scotland, but is not a shapeshifter. It has the head of a wolf and a man’s body, and is most known for leaving fish on the windowsills of poor people.

Despite the legends saying it is an immortal spirit, sightings of it have only been recorded for about 100 years. However, rumours have gone back much further.

One rumour is that they often appear in places where gold or treasure is hidden. Another is that they are an omen of impending death – but another story suggests that rather than bringing death, they hang forlornly around the property of someone who’s terminally ill to give comfort, rather than fear.

They often rescue frightened travellers, silently beckoning to follow and leaving the traveler at the edge of the nearest town.

There are many theories about the real life existence of Wulvers, and that’s something that we will look at next week, along with real life examples of werewolves, weredogs and other shapeshifting stories that may be true…

Real Life Wesen 01: The Rat King

In this new series, we’re gonna be looking at some of the folklore and history behind some of the Wesen, gangs and other monsters of Grimm.

This week we’re gonna be looking at the Rat King, and as David Giuntoli said ‘Don’t Google images of real life rat kings.’ Below the cut is talk of animal injury and animal death.

There is a lot of superstition surrounding the rat kings and why or how they are made, or even operate.  It’s long asserted that they are purely mythical, but a living one of squirrels was found in 2013. They were melded together by the sap from the tree they lived on, and moved as one giant animal instead of several squirrels tied together.  Apparently this is not uncommon. The picture through the link is of them being untied.

So what is a rat king? It’s, nominally, a group of rats tied together at the tails. The creepy thing is, instead of moving as seven (or 16, or 32 depending on which story you’re reading) rats/mice/squirrels, it appears to move as one monstrous creature.

The appearance of a rat king is a bad omen, probably due to the connection between rats and the plague.

It is said that rat kings appear naturally, like the squirrel king above, but evidence shows them sometimes being tied together with things like horsehair, which doesn’t appear in rat nests.

Terry Pratchett comes up with the most logical idea in The Amazing Maurice and His Educated Rodents – “down the ages some cruel and inventive people have had altogether too much time on their hands".

Yeah, they don’t look like that. In fact, it’s worse.

Further Reading:

The Amazing Maurice and His Educated Rodents by Terry Pratchett, which was one of my most favourite books as a kid. Featuring talking rats, cats and dastardly plans, it’s actually one of Pratchett’s scarier books, especially of his children’s books.

Metro Article about the squirrels – has a picture of them being untied, but it’s not bloody or gory. YMMV.

Happy Holidays, Grimmsters!

Not a huge amount used this season, but I always recommend getting a hold of the album by Richard Marvin. Last time I checked you could only buy it in physical form from Amazon, but it’s a real treat.

Siobhan’s Endless Royals Meta: Part I’ve Completely Forgot Now

King Frederick Renard was King of (presumably, and only) Austria, and head of Kronenburg House, which had interests as far as America, Germany* and possibly some other places too.

He had two children that we know about – his son by his wife, Eric, and his son by Elizabeth Laschelles, Sean.

It’s unsure how much control he actually had over the Royals. Most of the power appears to have been devolved to the Crown Prince – Eric wasted it, but Viktor was able to launch assassination attempts against one of his sons with the full knowledge of the leader of the Verrat, who sided with Viktor and not the King. Rispoli later said their loyalty is to the Family, not to any particular member, so it served Viktor well to frighten them, so perhaps Frederick had less control of the Verrat in particular.

However, he could recall Viktor from his duties in Portland and it perhaps becomes less of whether Frederick had any power, and more whether he gave a shit about certain things or not. We don’t know what else the Royals were up to, and it could be the case that Frederick was tied up with more conventional royal duties and delegated most of the Grimm duties to Viktor.

He was a bit of a fluffball and had grand plans for Diana that didn’t seem hugely creepy, because we did see him treat Diana like the little child she was. However, he did mention she would be the builder of kingdoms or something like that, so maybe he had the sort of plans that Sean was so worried about. We don’t know all that much about him. He states that it was his wife that attempted to have Sean and Elizabeth killed, but it’s never been confirmed or denied by anyone else. Sean doesn’t seem particularly bothered to hear his father has been killed, being much more emotional about his half-brother, but that’s another post.

It’s unsure whether he killed his wife for her machinations against Sean, or she was killed by someone else or even died of natural causes. He certainly has a fondness for Hexenbiests as evidenced by his flirtations with Juliette, so it’s more than possible HE knew Elizabeth was a Hexenbiest, just that the castle as a whole didn’t. We’ll talk more about the ousting of Sean from the palace in a separate post.

He certainly didn’t forsee Viktor making a deal with the Resistance to murder him, but whether that is because Viktor is very good with a very tight inner circle, or Frederick wasn’t very smart, or nobody liked Frederick as King for some unknown reason. Or a mix of all three.

The next post we’ll look at Sean and Elizabeth leaving the castle, and Sean’s relationship with his father and brother.

*Monroe can work out from one or two keys that whatever the keys lead to is in Germany, so presumably the Royals with their four keys have come to the same conclusion.

Siobhan’s Endless Royals Meta, Part Two: Rings and Things

Note: I’m so sorry that I suddenly fell off grid with this. My personal life kind of imploded, but I’m okay 🙂 and back into the swing of things now

So, we’ll be looking at Sebastien this week, because he brings some interesting information.

Wait, Sebastien? Oh yeah. Look at his hand.

http://vignette4.wikia.nocookie.net/grimm/images/a/a2/Spy3.png/revision/latest/scale-to-width-down/185?cb=20121104195143&format=webp

That there, is the Royal ring. All the male Royals have it. Nobody else. Not even the female Royals – although we’ve only seen one. The assumption was that Mia was very low in the hierarchy and so didn’t ‘earn’ one. But! Sebastien wears one, and he’s so far down the hierarchy that it’s never really mentioned he is in fact a Royal. And as far as I know, no employee of the Royals wears the ring, so Sebastien must be of Royal Blood.

Gender seems to be the only exclusionary point on the rings – Bastien wears one, Sean wears one, Eric wears one, as do Viktor and Kenneth and Frederick.

So, wandering into meta territority here, who is Sebastien? He wouldn’t necesserily be closely related to Sean to be Sean’s ally, since Sean’s close family want him dead. It’s likely they were educated at some point together, and kept some contact. They don’t seem especially close, in a way that would suggest they’ve spent a lot of time together – they clearly cared about each other, but they weren’t ‘friends’.

Sebastien works for or with Sean, against the Royals. There’s this idea that everyone that works against the Royals is part of the Resistance, which simply isn’t true. Sebastien doesn’t want to work with the Resistance and in fact warns Sean against working with them.

He doesn’t seem comfortable being a spy. Admittedly, we only ever see him in high stress situations and Sebastien doesn’t appear to have been trained or groomed by the Royals in any specific way, but he always looks worried. The only time he doesn’t look worried is when he gives his life up for Meisner and Adalind and Diana. It’s also the only clear-cut altruistic thing he does – it’s never clear why he’s giving information to Sean, or takes Sean’s orders to save Adalind. This is because it’s not clear what Sean’s prerogative is. Sebastien reminds me a lot of Josh – an ordinary guy who walked into Hell and had to survive. That, and his closer-then-it-seemed relationship with Sean makes his death all the sadder.

And I don’t mean to imply that because Sebastien isn’t a Meisner or a Burkhardt or a Griffin hero type he’s a bad person, because that’s not right at all. He could have had a blessed life, and yet choose to spy, withstood torture and then gave his life for people he barely knew.

He could have had a nice life with the Royals, he didn’t appear to be bullied in any particular way, so it was Sebastien’s choice to work against them. Again, why is something we don’t know. Considering his constant fear, it’s possible that it’s simply because of how brutal a regime the Royals run, rather than personal reasons like the attempted murder of Sean.

We’ll never know for sure.

The Royals – Siobhan’s Endless Meta, Part One

fuckyeahnickburkhardt:

This will be a multi-part series on everybody’s  my favourite Grimm family – the Royals. In this part we will look at what we know about the Royals as a whole – how they are organised, what their aims are.

We will also look at the things in these categories that we don’t know, and either make educated guesses or explore options surrounding this missing information.

One thing I will mention right now is this: people on Grimm are very true to life – they lie, like Sean Renard, or simply get things wrong, like Aunt Marie, or believe things to be true just because that’s what they’ve been told, like Rosalee and many other Wesen. We cannot take things said on Grimm at face value, especially about such a multi-faceted subject like the Royals. Also, Grimm’s plot arcs are long and twisty. I’ve always thought that Sean was lying about being assassinated because of his heritage, I thought he made a move on his brother for the throne. Later, we find out Sean was telling the truth. As far as his father knows, anyway. This is just an example, but this happens many times on Grimm.

Who Are the Royals?

We know that there are Seven Royal Families, or Houses. According to Aunt Marie, Sean Renard, Kelly Burkhardt and the Resistance, their main aim is to subjugate Wesen and rule the entire world. What this actually means is unclear. Genocide, slavery, a mix of both? Or, do they subscribe to the Wesen Council’s worldview, as in a hidden Wesen world, just controlled entirely by the Royals? (A side note: it is unclear whether the Council is merely separate from the Royals, or if their relationship is actively antagonistic on both sides.)

Sean reckons they wish to see an end to democracy, which would surely mean attacks on Kehrseite – would these include revealing the Wesen world, or not? We just don’t actually know, beyond a hunt for the Keys, and later on, Diana, any of their actual concrete goals. Their attacks on Sean Renard are reactive – as in, he attempted or succeeded to derail one of their plans or was suspected of consorting with the Resistance, so until he consistently proves that he will not submit, he is allowed to live, which does muddy the waters considerably with regards to the relationship between Sean and the Royals as a whole.

Of course, when we talk about the Royals, who we actually are talking about is one House in particular, House Kronenberg, based in Austria.

The identity of any of the other Houses and the amount of their power is never mentioned. A House Lorraine is mentioned briefly in the comics, and during the Coins of Zakynthos arc in the show, a Japanese House was hinted at, but never stated or confirmed. It is also never confirmed that the Royals are particularly after the Coins either.

House of Kronenberg

At first glance, House Kronenberg seems to operate exactly like any real European Royal Family. The title of monarch passes down the male line, presumably first, rather than omitting the female descendants entirely. However, this is not confirmed – the only female descendant is of course Diana, who is valued for her powers, so would presumably get the throne even if ordinary female descendants were passed over.

But! There are two throwaway lines which seem to make House Kronenberg have more of a structure of a family criminal gang rather than a strict royal family. This is also hinted at many repeated mentions of ‘coming back into the family’ which always make me think of the Mafia and suchlike.

Viktor was ‘chosen’ to become the next Crown Prince. Now, as Dara O’Brien says ‘It’s a monarchy. You don’t get to pick!’ They only way someone could be chosen is if the people with the closest claim were twins, but even then I think it would be the first born, but don’t quote me on that.

Sean Renard might possibly have a claim to the throne. I’ve mentioned this before – Sean is a bastard, he should not have a claim. He came out of the wrong vagina, there is no possible way of hiding that, so his step-mother should not have worried about a Hexenbiest on the throne. The only way Sean would have a claim to the throne is by conquest, if he managed to convince the people he was a better, but just as rightful, King than his brother. Even then, it’s dodgy, because there are many people and places where a bastard has no claim ,not ever. And most Kings than end up on the throne this way hold it for a very short time, and meet grisly ends. And usually have their Kingship revoked, or whatever the correct term is. I’m looking at this issue from a British viewpoint because that’s what I’m most familiar with. I’m also no historian, so if anybody knows anything about Austrian Royalty past or present, please come forward and clear this one up.

The conclusion that I am drawing with limited knowledge of the situation is either the step-mother wanted an excuse, and that’s a pretty poor one, or Sean could have a claim.

This is both backed up and disproven by the chosen Royal theory – if Sean has a rightful claim, why is anybody chosen to be Prince, or if anybody can be chosen to be Prince, what would it matter that Sean was Eric’s half brother?

In the next post, we will look at the rings, talk some more about other bastards and look at some other odd things about the Royals in general, and from there we will begin to look at the main players of the Royals and the game they play. If I’ve missed something or made an error, please let me know! Obviously, Grimm has a habit of pulling contradicting information out of its proverbial behind, so prepare for this to be rendered useless after Series Five. 😦

Edited to add: The Mysterious Presence Known Only As D alerted me (some time ago, forgive me) to this: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prince-elector which basically is real world electoral monarchy. So, by this reckoning, Sean does have a claim, but it is unlikely that Wesen who agree with the Royals would agree with a half breed on the throne. Unlikely, but not impossible. It’s sounding more and more like that the Royals have a very shaky hold on the Wesen world, and fear that Wesen could stand behind somebody like Sean and attempt to overthrow them.

And to be fair, they do.
